Downtown Concert Series with Kenny LogginsMy mom was a huge Kenny Loggins fan, so I spent several years in the backseat of her car belting out <i>Highway to the Danger Zone, Heart to Heart</i> and <i>Footloose</i> with reckless abandon. Yes, there was a phase where this transitioned into that whole weird <i>Return to Pooh Corner</i> weirdness, but I’ve since powered through and <i>Footloose</i> remains at the top of my ‘Songs to Karaoke at Colonial Lanes on Friday Night’ rotation.<br />
<br />
In my head, Kenny Loggins still looks like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1eCpkrzD9cXZAVhKJfUH7yS8LJl2F5XbXQMlGFctsoBJqhyphenhyphenOYBlbrCzM0Kc-sqMPMxE0osLHaS_cO-U9r-z4G34pQfCcfRC_8ttZqNJw5HnpLtAXFz3bB-NEYhyphenhyphenxAaYUlwKVDiYqfU1in/s1600/kenny+loggins+then.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="199" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1eCpkrzD9cXZAVhKJfUH7yS8LJl2F5XbXQMlGFctsoBJqhyphenhyphenOYBlbrCzM0Kc-sqMPMxE0osLHaS_cO-U9r-z4G34pQfCcfRC_8ttZqNJw5HnpLtAXFz3bB-NEYhyphenhyphenxAaYUlwKVDiYqfU1in/s320/kenny+loggins+then.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
In reality, Kenny Loggins now actually looks like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKhhUW3TWYaEx4E41DUv_nzA96-UuQotKPo3zYR4aJ7jx524iORM-86Ycfy_tHt9skeCO9JcgOHv1KEp7RxMHqNVbLTL-rnI73pcOz48YeJ1Jb1c6AiuqcUwIU7s-4-ohhVSH3dBK16Sxg/s1600/kenny+loggins+now.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKhhUW3TWYaEx4E41DUv_nzA96-UuQotKPo3zYR4aJ7jx524iORM-86Ycfy_tHt9skeCO9JcgOHv1KEp7RxMHqNVbLTL-rnI73pcOz48YeJ1Jb1c6AiuqcUwIU7s-4-ohhVSH3dBK16Sxg/s320/kenny+loggins+now.jpg" width="212" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
But, if you drink enough before heading to the <b><a href="http://www.wmmo.com/s/dcs/kennyloggins/" target="_blank">WMMO Downtown Concert Series</a></b> next Saturday, Kenny Loggins can be whatever Kenny you want him to be.<br />
<br />
This edition of the concert series (which just brought Huey Lewis & the News to town) is moving locations – it’ll be on the corner of <b>Orange and Amelia</b> in front of the courthouse. The show starts at <b>9 p.m..</b> It’s <b>free</b>, but if you want to avoid the masses and have a reserved VIP seat, those are $46.<br />

Anyway, I’m stoked that I getting to see<a href="http://www.youarestars.com/home/"> Stars</a> twice in the past year: their live show is one of the best. If you like indie rock (think Broken Social Scene, which all of the members of Stars are also are a part of) and melodramatic, theatrical songs about ghosts, love and heartbreak, then you’ll be into this show. I promise. Tickets are $15 and still available. (Plus, no fees if you buy them at the Firestone box office!)<br /><br />I got to talk with Amy Millan, Stars’ babe of a co-lead singer, about the new tour, plans for future music, and what’s on her playlist. Check it out!<br /><br /><b>You toured last year in support of<i> Five Ghosts</i>, and since then you've released <i>The Bedroom Demos</i>, the demos from 2007's <i>In Our Bedroom After the War</i>. What can expect to hear most of on this current tour? A good mix of old and new?</b><br /><br />It’s interesting having five albums and four EPs -- there is SO MUCH TO CHOOSE FROM!! For our own sanity we need to mix it up and challenge ourselves for every new tour, which means the setlist is always a mixed bag. We always want to make sure we are playing some fan favorites because the fans are the ones buying the tickets and we wouldn't want to disappoint. Playing the favorites always means we get a sing along as well, which is the very best of anything.<br /><br /><b>You and Torquil (fanciest name ever) split most of the band's vocals, is the band's songwriting also a collaborative process?</b><br /><br />All publishing is split between the five of us on every song – that’s how collaborative it is. No song would be the song without every member present.<br /><br /><b>Are there any current plans to record new music in the future?</b><br /><br />YES! We are in the middle of recording and writing the next album, and we are actually playing some of the newest and freshest tunes on this tour. It’s terrifying and exciting! We have never played songs that have yet to be even finished before.<br /><br /><b>What's on your playlist right now?</b><br /><br />PJ Harvey, Neon Indian, Beach House, Twin Sister and King Creosote.<br /><br /><b>Do you have a favorite place/ or is there anywhere you're looking forward to visiting while you're in Orlando?</b><br /><br />Well, we just made it to the beautiful beaches of Florida and we are LOVING IT!amy c.http://www.blogger.com/profile/03277172569277784038noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7513493740234549972.post-19900009546190419192011-10-04T18:21:00.009-04:002011-10-04T18:39:55.160-04:005 Can’t Miss Fall Shows - Becky's PicksWhat do I love about fall? Pumpkin everything (especially beeeeer), wearing layers (although that might not be well into November) and Halloween. And the best time of year in the Sunshine State brings a cornucopia of shows to our fair city. So grab an Octoberfest brew, grab a (light) jacket and head to one of these five. I am curious if these people have ears. Sure, the first self-titled release was good, but boy am I obsessed with the intricate layers of their second endeavor. (“Blue Cassette?” Goosebumps. “Hurting?” Gut-wrenchingly awesome. “Helpless?” Ohmygod, yes.) Eh, maybe it’s because I’m getting over a breakup and my emo side is shining through. Here's my Top 5 ... Becky will be posting hers later this week, plus check out the column on the right for even more listings.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Mates of State</span>, The Social, October 7<br />It’s been a not-so-secret goal of mine to marry a musician babe and tour around the country with our daughters in tow like Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel of <a href="http://www.matesofstate.com/" target="_blank">Mates of State</a> do. They’re out in support of their seventh album, Mountaintops, which is more guitar-heavy than previous releases (which used to be just drums and keys), but it's still just as upbeat and melodic. Well, here they are, less than a year later, touring in support of the same album (<span style="font-style: italic;">Five Ghosts</span>). This means they’ll likely play the same set I saw last year which doesn’t really bother me one bit because they are one of the most hauntingly beautiful bands I’ve ever seen.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Butch Walker & the Black Widows</span>, The Social, October 31<br />He was a one hit wonder in the 90s (Marvelous 3, anyone?) and now he's more banjo than bad-ass, but I still have a really strange crush on him. <br /></div>
<br />You know who’s awesome? These <a href="http://thelazyafternoon.com/" target="_blank">Lazy Afternoon</a> guys. In the last few months, they have busted their asses to drop some knowledge to this town. Have you heard of Questlove? Brought him. Pete Rock? Yep, him too. DJ Craze, Maseo, Kon and Cosmo Baker? Check, check, check, and check. These are guys after my own heart and we’re lucky they’re doing their thing in Orlando.
<br />
<br />Up next, they’re bringing back <a href="http://richmedina.com/" target="_blank">Rich Medina</a>, one of my all-time favorite DJs, on Sunday, September 4. Their party on Memorial Day weekend was the shizzzzz, with Mr. Medina rocking the dance floor with all types of music the whole evening. (That is, until Eye Spy resident DJ Perry decided to ruin everything. Seriously, what’s up with this guy? He is *still* dropping "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers like it came out yesterday.)
<br />
<br />This time the dance floor antics promise not to be cut short, as the party will be held at <a href="http://www.facebook.com/substanceartbar" target="_blank">SUbstance</a>. A reason to get there early: Orlando’s finest -- LT Smash, Kittybat and DJ Y-not -- will be on deck to warm up the dance floor.
<br />

<br />But seriously, it was a sad day when Will’s previous location was set to close its doors forever. Luckily the legacy has lived on thanks to the current spot (conveniently across from Wally’s in case you need a shot or two in between bands).
<br />
<br />This weekend, come support Will Walker, a man who has always tried to better our fair city, at <a href="http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=257736217577368" target="_blank">Will's Pub's Sweet 16th Anniversary Weekend</a>. Here’s the lineup:
<br />

<br />9/2 Thomas Wynn & the Believers w/ Six Time Losers, Jordan Wynn
<br />9/3 Shak Nasti & Gargamel!
<br />9/4 "Mommy's Little Monsters" Cover Show (Social D cover set with sets by Chopper Stepe w/ a full band, Weapons To Go, & Midtown Dave)

<br />Happy birthday! Here’s to another 16 years. (God, we’ll be old by then.)

<br />Today would have been the King of Pop’s 53rd birthday. Sad face. Luckily we can still remember him and his music (and try to forget about those crazy years towards the end there). Every year around this time, DJ BMF gathers his friends for a proper commemoration, Phat ‘N Jazzy style. This year, the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=133837573365833" target="_blank">3rd Annual Michael Jackson Tribute Party</a> is this Friday, September 2, at <a href="http://www.thesocial.org/" target="_blank">The Social</a> and features Gerry Williams and Swamburger to name a few. It’s always one of my favorite parties of the year, hands down. So dust off your fedoras and get ready to dance, shout and shake your body down to the ground.
<br />
<br />Rest in peace, MJ. I’m not going to make excuses or apologize, I’m just going to write, which is what I should have been doing for the past few months. Anyway, mark your calendars for <a href="http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=184604888254221">Ricky Powell’s World Famous Slideshow</a>. That’s right -- the semi-official <a href="http://www.rickypowell.com/">4th Beastie Boy</a> will be in our midst on Saturday, July 30 to show us his favorite career-span photos. And for someone who sweet-talked his way on tour with the Beasties and RUN DMC just as they were coming up on the scene (!!!), and has photographed some of the biggest names in the biz, you need to be there. The spot is <a href="http://www.motherfalconclothing.com/">Mother Falcon</a>, who will also put some of those iconic photos on t-shirts for your wearing pleasure. The DJs on hand know what’s up and it’s an event not to be missed. If you’re turned off by the word emo, you’ll be happy to know the band’s newer stuff, including their latest album <i style="">Invented</i>, is not as bad as it used to be. Yes, the music is moody and cinematic, but it also brings in non-emo traits like smart lyrics, big guitars and a louder, punk-inspired sound. (Try saying that five times fast.)<br /><br />But, seriously, head over to the <a href="http://dechoes.shoprw.com/pages.php?pageid=1">College Park location</a> of <a href="http://dechoes.shoprw.com/home.php">Dechoes</a>, one of Orlando’s best vintage shops, for the first 2011 installment of their famed <a href="http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=172702012768308">Wine Not Wednesday</a>. As if you need them, here are five reasons to go:<br /><br /><b>DJ Y-Not</b> Chances are, you’ve already heard of him; if not, it’s time you did. By far one of the most talented DJs Orlando has to offer, this dude has amazing taste in music, should have won the Red Bull 3 Style competition last March and threw some sick parties in 2010 (Kenny Dope and Deathrow vs. Bad Boy to name a few). Bottom line: see him.<br /><br /><b>Free Booze</b> As the name suggests, there will be free wine on hand. If that’s not your thing, grab a free Peroni beer or, if you’re feeling daring, have some of the spiked Dec-hoe punch. But be careful – it’s sponsored by Wally’s, so that can only mean a Thursday hangover.<br /><br /><b>Free Food </b>The newly-opened Graffiti Junktion in College Park provide the snacks to soak up some of the previously mentioned punch.<br /><br /><b>Cool Shit</b> To put it simply, Dechoes is the mack. Besides the usual resale items like clothing, shoes, purses and accessories, they also have amazingly dope retro household items. (Will someone please buy me a 70’s owl lamp?) And everything is so ridiculously affordable, even if you plan on not buying anything, a few glasses of Dec-hoe punch will surely loosen your wallet. (That is the point, after all!)<br /><br /><b>Support Local Businesses!</b> Here’s the deal – places like Dechoes are working for us. They’re busting their butt so we can have a better city. If we don’t help them out, we lose them. Too many cool businesses leave Orlando for greener pastures, so make sure you buy local as much as possible and keep them here. We need them. Orlando needs them. Thank you, Dechoes!<div><br /></div><div>Peep more info on the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=172702012768308">Facebook invite</a>.<br /><br />And if you’re feeling saucy after the party, head downtown to <a href="http://theatticorlando.com/">The Attic</a> (also formerly known as AKA Lounge) for <a href="http://www.cultureclimax.com/events/golden-age-wednesdays-at-the-attic">Golden Age Wednesdays</a>. This brand spankin’ new weekly party features the finer side of hip hop (before the auto-tune, that is), along with old school, neo-soul, reggae and R&B. The night is brought to us by the cool kids over at <a href="http://www.cultureclimax.com/">Culture Climax</a>, also busting their asses to make our fair city more hip and happening. So support them too! First on deck is DJ Hu Flave. (Please note the aforementioned DJ Y-Not slotted for January 19.)</div><div><br /></div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9GbwLYsUy0btyHXTOwGIv4SQKb3rYj9IjFpTu4j7pwiw_ONeDE3CcyGJjC6Qh1IaEgziIw_hSXz0Zr9vVg-NaSPX3uTnU1vO_5ZMJwC1daHn-aGaysa0JZSZr626tBYHh8e3uLrH-zaGS/s1600/167045_10100159860589942_5108695_54948848_7904300_n.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 273px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9GbwLYsUy0btyHXTOwGIv4SQKb3rYj9IjFpTu4j7pwiw_ONeDE3CcyGJjC6Qh1IaEgziIw_hSXz0Zr9vVg-NaSPX3uTnU1vO_5ZMJwC1daHn-aGaysa0JZSZr626tBYHh8e3uLrH-zaGS/s400/167045_10100159860589942_5108695_54948848_7904300_n.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558575750673110818" /></a><br /><br />Happy Wednesday!<br /></div>OMG, It's Becky!http://www.blogger.com/profile/13245311010991203683noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7513493740234549972.post-8270001885601550412010-12-28T19:37:00.004-05:002010-12-28T19:53:22.393-05:00New Years Eve Parties in Orlando - 2010/2011 Style!New Year’s Eve in upon us, which is usually hit or miss in our beloved Orlando. There’s plenty going on at the theme parks, Wall Street and Church Street, but here at Don’t Sleep Orlando, it’s our jobs to bring you the alternatives to such events.<br /><br />And after a few hours of scouring the internetz for some decent NYE parties, the pickins appear to be slim this year. I’m going to chalk it up to procrastinating on the part of clubs and promoters, although the super-mega-shiny-shirt clubs downtown seem to have their act together.<br /><br />Anyway, without further adieu, here is what’s on this New Year’s Eve in Orlando:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=135969043124034"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Don’t Forget with DJs Andrew Spear, Mot and Ken Sherry</span></a><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Best for:</span> The old Knock Knock crowd, fans of Jaegermeister<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Details:</span> This trio of DJs doesn’t disappoint and their music selections include everything from house, funk and disco to rock, electro and hip hop. Plus, they’re all a bunch of drunks (in a good way) so expect late night rantings on the microphone, plus Jaeger-fueled shenanigans.<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Where + How Much:</span> <a href="http://thepeacockroom.com/">Peacock Room</a>, $10<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">What’s in it for me?</span> Free champagne toast at midnight<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8Qv7h3NZU5zEmHAsQOweywFhvUEJL8Ch1YhpmnvFmw025kHcsWK6Mz5t8Jn4eGAzZ-9OmPbivIpqTORz92_m_jk2aXbPIuQXl02DN6MYCfBwQDU4qSRCcnErxAOdMP7uLV8e23BUh_Adp/s1600/166445_10150329500185511_821910510_16010699_2640913_n.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 178px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8Qv7h3NZU5zEmHAsQOweywFhvUEJL8Ch1YhpmnvFmw025kHcsWK6Mz5t8Jn4eGAzZ-9OmPbivIpqTORz92_m_jk2aXbPIuQXl02DN6MYCfBwQDU4qSRCcnErxAOdMP7uLV8e23BUh_Adp/s400/166445_10150329500185511_821910510_16010699_2640913_n.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555900565120408674" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=114170741990019"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Red and Black Party with DJ Secret Weapon and guests</span></a><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Best for:</span> Beer enthusiasts, the indie crowd<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Details:</span> The FB invite leaves much to be desired and Redlight Redlight doesn’t even have a freaking website. Yeah, it’s been a minute, but to quote the lyrical stylings of a Mr. Cool J, “Don’t call it a comeback, we’ve been here for years.”<br /><br />What’s new with me, you may be wondering? Well, I’ve been lucky enough to travel around the world with my jobby-job (including living in Finland for the last three months) so I’ve been a busy bee. I never did forget my beloved Don’t Sleep Orlando, though, especially every time I had to pay for the domain name.<br /><br />So, long story short, we’re back. I’ve found a new partner in crime to help me update these lovely event listings, so you can expect much from us in 2011. Announcements and introductions coming soon and we hope to have a comprehensive New Year’s Eve post up early next week, so stay tuned.<br /><br />But all this is not why I’m here. It is with a heavy heart that I bring news of a well-loved, downtown Orlando bar’s closing. Known for the iconic fried pickles, tater tots, po boys, 25 cent wing nights, and Orlando’s best bartender, Dan the Man, <a href="http://www.crookedbayou.com/">Crooked Bayou</a>, one of our favorite spots, has been sold.<br /><br />Sad face. :(<br /><br />In its place, a new BBQ joint will be moving in, and word on the street is they want to keep the status quo – same staff, same DJs, same venue. Supposedly only the menu will be different, but with new ownership, who knows what will happen.<br /><br />In the meantime, let’s drown our sorrows with one last hurrah this Thursday night. The annual holiday party put on by Hoochie Productions (always a major bash in itself) is being rebranded as the Official Crooked Bayou Closing party. (It pains me to even type that. I still don’t want to believe it’s true!) I can’t think of a better party to thank Crooked for their last 15 years of service to Orlando. Get more info at <a href="http://flathoochieproject.com/">Hoochie Productions’ website</a> or the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=175145055837212&ref=ts">Facebook invite</a>. The full menu goes until midnight, so have a Danimal and a Grand Slam shot for old times sake.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-mqhNlekc0dThXCPwTU1aJCNdiVnGAuTN_q-jqqhJ4BEPGcd30W0u1GHz9IG_zR49Q4Egz2Cnqk01XnfNkgTfDw8ILEiYIUFGJCate_9f-QP5qz5o8FO6hYnrYxsWffXvdFPemRtPuXUL/s1600/5267061721_9e60f4c566.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 304px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-mqhNlekc0dThXCPwTU1aJCNdiVnGAuTN_q-jqqhJ4BEPGcd30W0u1GHz9IG_zR49Q4Egz2Cnqk01XnfNkgTfDw8ILEiYIUFGJCate_9f-QP5qz5o8FO6hYnrYxsWffXvdFPemRtPuXUL/s400/5267061721_9e60f4c566.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552916579158775810" border="0" /></a><br />We’re looking forward to whatever future ventures the Bayou staff is involved in. I know.<br /><br />I haven’t been here in awhile but this is an excellent weekend to return. Why? Because of these two things:<br /><br />First up, you may or may not have heard the news about <a target="_blank" href="http://www.myspace.com/covertskateshop">Covert</a> getting robbed while <a href="http://www.myspace.com/mot" target="_blank">MOT</a> was out of town. Lame. So tonight, in an attempt to bring up his spirits, check out the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Music Never Forgets</span> party with Mot, <a href="http://www.spearlife.com/" target="_blank">Spear</a> and Ken Sherry at <a href="http://www.orlandoweekly.com/drinking/place.asp?id=2638" target="_blank">Sky60</a> (I don’t want to cave to their new branding until I absolutely have to!). And since it’s an offical <span style="font-weight: bold;">Surf Expo after party</span>, things are gonna get nuts (read: Jager. Planning a major party in one week has been stressful, but tonight we will reap the benefits! Our man Michael Jackson died one week ago today and we need to pay him respect. There have been a few other tribute parties here and there, but I guarantee this one will be the party of the year. 10 PM, <a href="http://www.thepeacockroom.com/" target="_blank">Peacock Room</a>, $5 cover.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe_xeugoTuQXPSPVl29f4V-1ZTS-iPSXJjBxnHjq_yu-AImBcPQCCxGAHKE98J1iwmgu-YA1spp70V4TJmfsfEPqvm2ZF5YdDtRkTlaZRQsJpmKZasIOEoDcF3WHyxQjxaJAAqeGxkKhRF/s1600-h/MJ+Tribute+Party.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 207px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe_xeugoTuQXPSPVl29f4V-1ZTS-iPSXJjBxnHjq_yu-AImBcPQCCxGAHKE98J1iwmgu-YA1spp70V4TJmfsfEPqvm2ZF5YdDtRkTlaZRQsJpmKZasIOEoDcF3WHyxQjxaJAAqeGxkKhRF/s320/MJ+Tribute+Party.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5353871887921470514" /></a><br />We encourage everyone to dress as appropriately as possible!!! This is a bittersweet victory for a few reasons: 1) Umm… don’t most people have to be at work early on Wednesday and Friday? and 2) Really, City of Orlando? All it took to extend drinking hours was the economy tanking and the Magic finally making the playoffs? If we ever hope to get back to the days of clubs actually staying open late, maybe we’ll just have to conjure some unicorns or teach pigs to fly. If the Magic can make the playoffs, anything is possible, right? Oh yeah, and fuck you for that parking ticket the other night. I was one minute late and on my way to refill your stupid meter!!!!<br /><br />Wait, what was I saying? Oh, right… more time to drink tonight! If you want to get all up in the downtown chaos, <a href="http://www.crookedbayou.com/" target="_blank">Crooked Bayou</a> is a great spot to watch the game. Not only do they have awesome food (try the Danimal with honey mustard and a side of tater tots), but they’ve also been featuring Magic-al drink specials throughout the playoffs.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ5WbR_U7ev5-EEJc8CrECSybsFJ1hC3DM5oEiZB8jlb5SIOz0j8SZKiWtMMP2L72O2To770hMBZ9dHWd2BfP5cZpliXzNMXrUvAJmMk8bOziZYWfDnR3x9Ci3p4_jXjeCAMU2B5TWjDMm/s1600-h/bayou-tots.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ5WbR_U7ev5-EEJc8CrECSybsFJ1hC3DM5oEiZB8jlb5SIOz0j8SZKiWtMMP2L72O2To770hMBZ9dHWd2BfP5cZpliXzNMXrUvAJmMk8bOziZYWfDnR3x9Ci3p4_jXjeCAMU2B5TWjDMm/s320/bayou-tots.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345357836157366194" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.myspace.com/theredlightredlight" target="_blank">Redlight Redlight</a> will also be showing the game this evening, along with hosting a special beer-tasting event. Should make for nice soggy BBQs this weekend. (Soggy BBQ sounds like a band name, doesn’t it?) In addition to the lame “hip hop artist” with the same name as our state performing at whack attack Tabu tonight (she hit the flo’, next thing you kno’, low, low, low, barf, barf, barf), there is plenty going down in our swampy city this holiday weekend.<br /><br />Music Never Forgets tonight at <a href="http://www.sky60.com/" target="_blank">Sky60</a> (weather permitting, of course) with <a href="http://www.myspace.com/mot" target="_blank">MOT</a>, <a href="http://www.spearlife.com/" target="_blank">Spear</a> and Huggy.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv7sLaihvJCTlfSEHmOfSp0CTDdJiQ8cKU1jFuupGsOVrXtzp9UI0TNRC0Oek0BxgMSEENBTzz1_sqywXcMkmj61204WRiddJJiQOYvjCUVCU-lnX0qiAAiukQmAF1-NjuvhGlSbyDy3Zn/s1600-h/music-never-forgets.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 149px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv7sLaihvJCTlfSEHmOfSp0CTDdJiQ8cKU1jFuupGsOVrXtzp9UI0TNRC0Oek0BxgMSEENBTzz1_sqywXcMkmj61204WRiddJJiQOYvjCUVCU-lnX0qiAAiukQmAF1-NjuvhGlSbyDy3Zn/s320/music-never-forgets.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338742171183417922" border="0" /></a><br /><br />I’m guessing this one may be canceled. If so, check out Nigel and Gomez at <a href="http://www.crookedbayou.com/" target="_blank">Crooked Bayou</a> instead.<br /><br />Tomorrow during the day, there’s a special event that has somehow managed to pair <a href="http://www.myspace.com/beersofarally" target="_blank">beer tasting with couch racing</a>. Not really sure what that’s all about but it sounds interesting.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpr6fapRyIgYmwHtNXCA2MRzfwobwn4nUGzpBqygIioCZOqIRwGjlB2iZwv0_Bd9mu5x-tmlZ701gRy-Sg36ZhwQG-2JfVwUszeDpSXMMkvagZuLNP0Cnd7pEEAtdoM9CbAzzvVkczeCzq/s1600-h/sofa-suds.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 207px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpr6fapRyIgYmwHtNXCA2MRzfwobwn4nUGzpBqygIioCZOqIRwGjlB2iZwv0_Bd9mu5x-tmlZ701gRy-Sg36ZhwQG-2JfVwUszeDpSXMMkvagZuLNP0Cnd7pEEAtdoM9CbAzzvVkczeCzq/s320/sofa-suds.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338742371047361778" border="0" /></a><br /><br />If skateboards and artwork are your thing, check out Pushin’ VIII at <a href="http://boldhype.com/" target="_blank">Bold Hype</a> tomorrow night. It seems as if the feast or famine rule also applies to the weather. A drought for 3 months followed by torrential downpours for 3 days straight (and counting)? Why not spread these things out a bit??? It would make for happier residents.<br /><br />Anyways, if the rain finally decides to stop, or if you can rock a pair of galoshes like nobody’s business, then wade your way to one of these parties tonight.<br /><br />The almighty Rocksteady crew is taking on <a href="http://www.myspace.com/welcometobrownsville" target="_blank">Brownsville</a> tonight for Sound Clash Soul @ <a href="http://www.thepeacockroom.com/" target="_blank">Peacock</a>: <a href="http://www.myspace.com/2297469" target="_blank">Kittybat</a> and <a href="http://www.myspace.com/pdiddlesp" target="_blank">Diddles</a> vs. <a href="http://www.myspace.com/djnigel" target="_blank">Nigel</a> and <a href="http://www.myspace.com/_thinkdifferent" target="_blank">ThinkDifferent</a>. Serato will be in effect.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5vmEEPLWmr-m-j_GUqIvt2spLW-VwOO9josV8hWlgYXnKAF_90c9ufdueVEnMzaUWX4NxhGbLNdN0Pv8SVt-3DJjpPa8OvmZw_CJI8_eXsSrA0ayNI5l6sB_QXlarT7BHbJZF17-blBxE/s1600-h/05-20-09.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5vmEEPLWmr-m-j_GUqIvt2spLW-VwOO9josV8hWlgYXnKAF_90c9ufdueVEnMzaUWX4NxhGbLNdN0Pv8SVt-3DJjpPa8OvmZw_CJI8_eXsSrA0ayNI5l6sB_QXlarT7BHbJZF17-blBxE/s320/05-20-09.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337921758357160402" border="0" /></a><br />And it seems the monthly <a href="http://www.myspace.com/goodlookparty" target="_blank">Good Look</a> party has been moved from beloved <a href="http://www.bikkurisushi.com/" target="_blank">Bikkuri Sushi</a>. Why? According to a cryptic Facebook message, it seems Bikkuri has been violating city codes and has been shutdown indefinitely. So much for the secret venue with seizure-inducing disco lights (they were a cool photo backdrop, though). The new home of Good Look is <a href="http://orlando.metromix.com/restaurants/american/the-beacon-downtown-orlando/179512/content" target="_blank">The Beacon</a>, which just doesn’t seem the same. Maybe it’s the frat boy-esque, “see and be seen” vibe that accompanies most of the restaurants in Thorton Park. Can the Good Look kids thrive in this kind of environment? We’ll find out tonight.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBdjgTzKOVauI2eFGPANwUWxMKjDJS0AsI2F3D4MV7oJt_Av95PVNVKS1Uad-EiFTw5fUQ8m3cWPYJn6cxDoTK0BBGj8YTyj9Ep4HyWyJSwmHQCp_dTFXSUtMeBW4j0KtPUXzhnyJvMA2L/s1600-h/FLYERBACKcopyjpg.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBdjgTzKOVauI2eFGPANwUWxMKjDJS0AsI2F3D4MV7oJt_Av95PVNVKS1Uad-EiFTw5fUQ8m3cWPYJn6cxDoTK0BBGj8YTyj9Ep4HyWyJSwmHQCp_dTFXSUtMeBW4j0KtPUXzhnyJvMA2L/s320/FLYERBACKcopyjpg.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337921848217321442" border="0" /></a>Happy Wednesday!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.blogger.com/profile/13245311010991203683"><img src="http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff38/dontsleeporlando/omgib-sig.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>OMG, It's Becky!http://www.blogger.com/profile/13245311010991203683noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7513493740234549972.post-8811675956966124312009-05-18T11:06:00.003-04:002009-05-18T11:12:47.963-04:00Art Show: Charles MarklinTonight at the <a href="http://www.thepeacockroom.com/" target="_blank">Peacock Room</a>) don't miss the opening reception for "Girls of Color" presented by local artist <a href="http://www.marklinart.com/" target="_blank">Charles Marklin</a>. Who’s there?<br /><br />Banana. Banana who?<br /><br />Knock, knock. Who’s there?<br /><br />Banana. Banana <span style="font-style: italic;">who</span>?<br /><br />Knock, knock. Ugh, <span style="font-style: italic;">who’s there</span>?<br /><br />Orange. Orange who?<br /><br /><a href="http://www.orangeyougladfest.com/" target="_blank">Orange You Glad</a> (I didn’t say Banana, yuk yuk) musical festival kicks off tonight at <a href="http://www.myspace.com/willspub" target="_blank">Will's Pub</a> and it's chock-full of local bands playing local venues for your supporting pleasure. <a href="http://www.orangeyougladfest.com/schedule.html" target="_blank">Peep the full weekend schedule here.</a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhajsnhokrLzKlJD-Y4_AILzhlGA44b_9s8HLtrOmABq9btlXr2azIpZUC5vKLv8DLH3C5A51Sjb49IEwLsYlvnLZtEAykd33zT4zDpUahuu1sBYXDccXSjOF3tQfgG1iOY29RmrR-d0wor/s1600-h/oygposterweb.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhajsnhokrLzKlJD-Y4_AILzhlGA44b_9s8HLtrOmABq9btlXr2azIpZUC5vKLv8DLH3C5A51Sjb49IEwLsYlvnLZtEAykd33zT4zDpUahuu1sBYXDccXSjOF3tQfgG1iOY29RmrR-d0wor/s320/oygposterweb.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335779906113079810" border="0" /></a><br />And yet another music festival began last night – <a href="http://www.floridamusicfestival.com/" target="_blank">The Florida Music Festival</a>. Two festivals in one weekend??? Seriously? We couldn’t have, like, spread it out between two weekends or something? It’s a good thing for Orlando but geez… what about those weekends where I don’t have a lot to write about? Anyways, enough about me. Check the FMF schedules by day:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.floridamusicfestival.com/2009/04/fmf2009-official-schedule-thur-may-14th/" target="_blank">Thursday schedule</a><br /><a href="http://www.floridamusicfestival.com/2009/04/fmf2009-friday-night-schedule/" target="_blank">Friday schedule</a><br /><a href="http://www.floridamusicfestival.com/2009/04/fmf2009-saturday-night-schedule/" target="_blank">Saturday schedule</a><br /><br />Also, don’t miss the <a href="http://www.myspace.com/fmfrockwalk" target="_blank">Rock Walk</a>, an art show in conjunction with the FMF at the <a href="http://www.cityartsfactory.com/" target="_blank">City Arts Factory</a>. I can’t find a lot of information about the show, but I do know that <a href="http://www.spearlife.com/" target="_blank">Andrew Spear</a> has painted two dope murals on the wall, which are probably both worth seeing in person. This is one of them:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMExPABSyNMwrlJpT1jr6yIOcz1kApKmgzTM9WzzKvCRMbXLvgxLsZ9nQxzdLZVrHruKSEdCsxKOeOZSlt_vbKXXqeNHtrfwfnQlnSFTordP6JJZR0uEj6Jv21jEK7lnoHcWcCtU7_5grV/s1600-h/andrew-mural.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 239px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMExPABSyNMwrlJpT1jr6yIOcz1kApKmgzTM9WzzKvCRMbXLvgxLsZ9nQxzdLZVrHruKSEdCsxKOeOZSlt_vbKXXqeNHtrfwfnQlnSFTordP6JJZR0uEj6Jv21jEK7lnoHcWcCtU7_5grV/s320/andrew-mural.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335778966913414034" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Finally, if music festivals aren't your thing, but overdramatic theater people are, then you won't want to miss <a href="http://www.orlandofringe.org/" target="_blank">Orlando Fringe Festival</a>, which also kicks off tonight. This cover of Watermark pretty much sums it up:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMz-8yLIIDOsOqFgD8QuGtE6Z-ZWSHkeBS7zjmfW-TBAvrMDVxNQrBTtAonWK9BMAPeYF1D14UEgeAW0Qq77MbvIOiXBgzXfiZonNO8STrR_-e-CNNoeWq4awh2s55EDQkosV1oCMJfXUM/s1600-h/1610Cover.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 294px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMz-8yLIIDOsOqFgD8QuGtE6Z-ZWSHkeBS7zjmfW-TBAvrMDVxNQrBTtAonWK9BMAPeYF1D14UEgeAW0Qq77MbvIOiXBgzXfiZonNO8STrR_-e-CNNoeWq4awh2s55EDQkosV1oCMJfXUM/s320/1610Cover.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335778879097476242" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Have a fun-filled festival weekend!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.blogger.com/profile/13245311010991203683"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 100px; height: 91px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCiUnxOIAfqLFcdxPaZD5H7wj-5VpsW55WlxNHAqozpbc0u7vWVFhnwMb6B7ddmQrWV8Vlq4fDo8JTknNcCx3EbTABp3ZKrLwwu7bDmF6A2PcrZgQcz7ATmOKErFeabg1LI4j5qKVyL6tg/s200/omgib-sig.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335780792359327378" border="0" /></a>OMG, It's Becky!http://www.blogger.com/profile/13245311010991203683noreply@blogger.com0
