Dear recent Orlando transplant:

Ok, so you just moved to Orlando from New York / Philly / Chicago / San Francisco / et al. You feel lost, uprooted, misplaced -- you're starting to think Orlando might suck. Eager to find some nightlife in this town, you go to Lattitudes on Church Street, Slingapour's on Wall Street and that mega-club on Orange Avenue owned by one of those Backstreet Boys (Orlando's finest celebrities). Maybe you even think International Drive, Citywalk or Downtown Disney is where everyone hangs out in this town. Now you really think Orlando sucks.

Well, you're wrong. There is more to this city than theme park "nightlife" and crappy clubs with guys wearing shiny shirts, but you have to know where to look. Instead of complaining about how lame Orlando is compared to your city of origin, why not get out there and support your new scene -- it's a lot better than you think! After all, you moved here for a reason, right? (I'm guessing to escape the cold weather.) So you can do one of two things: either 1) move back to the city you think is sooooo much more awesome or 2) quit bitchin', check the events below and DON'T SLEEP on the shit that is happening!

Krames and Carnival: Installment No. 3

Today I woke up crampy, bloated, menstrual and bitchy. My arthritic knee pounding thanks to the ridiculous humidity from Fay. I was tired before getting out of bed.

Nevertheless tonight i will be out on the town for the third appearance of NY based Krames at (what rumors have it will be the last) Carnival. And if I can make it, you sure as hell can too.

His last two appearances at Orlando's Wednesday night weekly were arguably two of the best nights for the ongoing event, and this third appearance is most likely going to fall right in with the rest. Residents Hall Call, Keyth Conversion and crew will be there to start the party at 10 and rock the house as usual.

So, shake off the dust, ring out the water from your v-neck t-shirt and come out to party with those irreverent carnies. Its bound to be one hell of a party.

Grits n' Gravy + Nate Day

Are you upset at Becky because youre not 21 yet and can't get into the Peacock Room for Cub and Nigel? Well, don't go beatin her up just yet, cuz I've got you covered.

After your fromp at the Drunken Monkey, you wont be far from I bar, which every Tuesday nights gives you just about all the old soul, funk and rock and roll that your little tushy can handle. Its free for 21+ (hey, I dont make the rules) but only $3 for the little ones. Drink specials include $1 PBRs if you get there early.

And tomorow, head out to Carnival at Suite B, get a sneak peak at This Friday's insanity. The Carnival boy's are slacking on promotion, but the night will give you a good idea of what to expect at Get Mental. Or maybe not, since Day is about as unpredictable as Mot and Spear and all the other DJ's free-for-alling on fri.

NYC invades Carnival tonight!

Yes, the above photo is of Microbes. I have done the hard work finding his Myspace for you. Just try searching for his name in the Google. See if you get back a insane amount of science-y websites that have nothing to do with music. Maybe, just for fun, add the word "electro" and see what you get! Even more scientific jargon, I'll bet.

Apparently he is from a collective in NYC calling themselves The Ruff Club. From what I can gather, the six of them are prone to the color hot pink and had pretty decent taste in music as of September 2007.

Another member of the club is Denny Le Nimh. He didn't have a cool animated Gif, but he likes big yellow smiley faces and had the dopest Robin costume ever in 1979:

Catch them both at Carnival tonight as they show us how it's done in NYC (and vice versa).

Tonight: Felix Cartal and Suprise Guest DJ!

Canadian super electro-kid, Felix Cartal, will be gracing the tables with the guys of Carnival this evening. Although his Myspace page lists him playing at Studio B tonight, he's actually playing at the more idiotically-named Suite B (Yes, it was unoriginally named after their address. Yes, and everyone thinks you're saying Sweet Pea).

Felix has certainly proved himself to be a big dog in the electro game, remixing the likes of MSTRKRFT, Dragonette and Franz and Shape, to name a few. And I must say, anyone who can make me like a Britney Spears or Ashlee Simpson track must have some skills.

Not necessarily his most recent, but here are some of my favorite tracks:

Felix Cartal - Drugs.mp3

Felix Cartal - Moss vs. Tree.mp3

Britney Spears - Outrageous (Felix Cartal Remix).mp3

Ashlee Simpson - L.O.V.E. (Felix Cartal Remix).mp3

Now, onto the real fun of this post: a section I like to call, "Guess the Heavily-Advertised 'Surprise Guest DJ'!!!"

Assuming there actually is a surprise DJ, let's look at the options. Based on Felix's "Top 8" (yes, most of my research is based on Myspace), here are the choices:

The D.A. - I have to be honest: I have no idea who these dudes are. Maybe a Canadian DJ crew of sorts? All I can gather is they are also from British Columbia and they're "sort of like an abortion but with more cursing." I can't even Google search them without a million Da Vinci Code pages coming up, so I'm ruling them out.

MSTRKRFT - They were just in O-town on the 14th + they're playing in Norway tonight = I am crossing them off the list.

AM - Lol... straight from his website: "You know a party is hot; high profile and happening if AM is the DJ. A-Listers show up to events not to be seen but to hear AM spin and tear up the dance floor to his records of choice." Yeah right. They're showing up because he dated Nicole Richie. I'm guessing the most pretentious LA DJ alive is not the one playing tonight.

Miko - Um, I think this is Felix Cartal's manager and he isn't even a DJ. So.... no.

The Bloody Beetroots - I heart these guys so much and wish they would come to Orlando; I'm even learning Italian for when they come to Florida and I can take them and Crookers to Disney World. Their only US dates appear to be in LA or NYC at the moment, though, so they look like a no-go. Ché Vergogna.

Hostage - This Scotsman has remixed Felix Cartal several times and vice versa. He's super dope but also over in the UK this weekend and It's doubtful that a mid-week trip to Orlando was on his agenda.

This brings us to our final two:

LA Riots vs. Lazaro Casanova. I know the Carnival guys are friends with LA Riots but they were here pretty recently. If I had to guess, I would imagine the super secret DJ is Miami's own Lazaro Casanova. Maybe they're keeping him under wraps because the only time I ever saw him DJ, he managed to completely CLEAR the dance floor. At the Winter Music Conference, no less. Yikes.

So there you have it -- based solely upon my (not so sharp) deduction skills, Lazaro will be spinning with the Carnival boys tonight. Perhaps I should have been a detective.

Happy Wednesday!!!

EDIT: Damn, I was *this* close. As a late-breaking Myspace bulletin reports: "Don't forget, a Special Guest will be causing RIOTS on the dance floor earlier in the evening." I guess LA Riots it is!

1.21 Gigawatts?!?!?!

Warning: I couldn't resist the numerous Back to the Future quotes in the post that follows.

If you're gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style? And if you're gonna start a producer slash DJ outfit that cranks out discofied-electro music, why not give Doc Brown's wheels a paint job? Cue Hot Pink Delorean. Hailing from Red Sox Nation (that's Boston for the baseball illiterate), these guys have been blowing up music blogs and dance floors across the land. And thanks to the Carnival kids, HPD's density -- I mean, their destiny -- has brought them to us. Count on them to get your badonkadonk moving at Suite B tonight, because if my calculations are correct, when this baby hits eighty-eight miles per hour... you're gonna see some serious shit.

Here are some MP3s to get you in a righteous mood.

Hot Pink Delorean - Played Out (Feat. Fantastadon).mp3

Hot Pink Delorean - Badonkadonk.mp3

Hot Pink Delorean - Freak Night.mp3

Carnival + Krames = <3

If you missed Krames the last time he played in Orlando, you're in luck because the Carnival kids are bringing the Cobra Kai member back to Suite B this evening. Check out his Euro Thrash mix below for a preview of what's to come.

Tonight: LA Riots take over Carnival!!!

No, not those LA Riots! These LA Riots!

I caught them during the WMC this year at the club owned by Tommy Lee in Miami (PS... huge thanks to the Carnival guys for getting us past the meatheads at the door!!!). LA Riots totally killed the place and had the dance floor going off -- unfortunately Lazaro Casanova went on after them and ruined the whole thing. I have never seen anyone literally clear the dance floor at the conference, but somehow he managed to do it. AND Bloody Beetroots missed the gig because their flight was canceled or some crap. Wait, I'm getting off track -- LA Riots are awesome.

Don't take my word for it -- see for yourself tonight when the cool kids take over snooty Suite B every Wednesday for Carnival! These guys have been bringing some major talent to Orlando and I give them mad props for what they're doing for the scene. \m/

And now for some music:

The Toxic Avenger - Escape (LA Riots Remix).mp3
Justice - D.V.N.O. (LA Riots Bootleg).mp3
Heartsrevolution - Switchblade (LA Riots Remix).mp3

For a sneak preview of what you can expect tonight, here's a mix they did back in January (via Zshare).

Tonight: Liars + Windham Group + Carnival

I have to make this quick and dirty since I am drowning with all the things I have to do today. Some days I just wish I could leave the nine-to-five upon the shelf and just enjoy myself.

A few options tonight, (in addition to the weekly party, Carnival, of course):

They may have played second fiddle to Radiohead last night, but tonight at The Social, it's all about the Liars. If you've never heard them, a free four-track EP is available for download on their website.

PS... the lead singer wants to eat your soul.

Opening for them are homegrown favorites, Summerbirds in the Cellar. You may recognize them from when they were bartenders who snuffed you at Bar BQ Bar, refusing to serve you drinks because you weren't cool enough. Actually, I think it was just the lead singer who worked there and I think he may have been a barback or something, but they all look the same to me. I always went to Laura for drinks anyway.

Also playing tonight over at The Peacock Room is The Windham Group, an extremely talented live jazz trio comprised of Errol Windham on guitar, Tony Venturini on bass and Willie Rast on drums. They also host Blow Sundays, the weekly open-mic/jam session at Tanquerays. For a sneak preview before the show, you can hear their tracks on their Myspace page or download their podcast. Stereo 77 will be providing music between their sets this evening.

Happy Wednesday!

Wednesday is going off!

Tonight has a lot in store to "get over your hump day" or "cure your mid-week blues" or some other dumb phrase to describe getting drunk on a Wednesday.

First up is Múm, who (according to the most reliable source of information on the web) is an "experimental Icelandic musical group whose music is characterized by soft vocals, electronic glitch beats and effects, and a variety of traditional and unconventional instruments." All I know about them is their names are hard to pronounce (God, I am such an American) and their stylist seems to want them to be the most stereotypical hipsters I have ever seen, as demonstrated below. Emo song titles include "We Have a Map of the Piano," "Weeping Rock, Rock," and "Dancing Behind My Eyelids." If this sounds like your scene, they are performing tonight at The Plaza Theatre.

Next we have Meat Beat Manifesto, another experimental outfit of the heavier variety, playing tonight at The Social. If Múm is airy and dreamy, MBM is synthy and dark. Their live show incorporates more of an audio-visual aspect and I'm guessing drugs would enhance the experience.

If you know me well enough, you would know I would never set foot on Church Street without a good reason. Unfortunately tonight, there is a good reason -- one that will force me to go to Antigua for the first time ever. While I roll my eyes at shiny shirt guys and under-dressed chicks with fake boobs, Andrew Spear and DJ Mega will be providing the tunes. Redeeming qualities of the night include awesome music, 3 for 1 drinks until midnight and 2 for 1 shots after midnight (hellllloooooo Thursday hangover!)

The Carnival kids are doing what they do every Wednesday at Suite B. Tonight they will be seeing off resident DJ h∆LLc∆LL for his NYC tour. Shit will be bananas, as it is every week.

And last, but definitely not least, The Peacock Room will be presenting Remember When, a "live retrospective into funk, soul, hip hop and jazz" hosted by Stereo 77 and Rod-1. Should also be pretty dope.

PS... I want to wish a SUPER HAPPY AWESOME BIRTHDAY to my boy Tony, aka Schwa who is currently residing in Dallas and taking over!!!! Miss you, kid!!! :)

Condo Art + Krames Say Relax

Orlando is the land of oversaturated, unnecessary, overpriced condo developments. The newest installment in this trend, Mills Park, on the corner of Mills and Virginia, is hosting its very first art show this evening. Bay Two is being curated by Lot1433 and features over 25 local artists. Supposedly the warehouse space is dope and, if all goes well tonight, could make for an awesome new art venue in town. The show starts at 7:00 PM, and the $7 cover includes an OPEN BAR. Yeah!

Artists include:
Christian Guevarra, Charles Marklin, Frank Gady, Johannah O'Donnell, Robert Beck, Robin Pedrero, Vadim Malkin, Ryan Burkhart, Anna McCambridge, Doug Rhodehamel, Adriaan Mol, Elizabeth Shupe, Jessica Peguero, Brigan Gresh, Dana Hargrove, Andrew Spear, Dina Mack, Mark Hofreiter, Andrew White, Elizabeth Nelson, Parker Sketch, Paul Sanders, William Volker, Ryan Kittleson, Rachel Simmons, and more!

So support your local artists, get a nice buzz and then head over to Suite B with all the cool kids for Carnival. Tonight's special guest DJ is Krames of Cobra Kai (the promoters, not the Karate Kid dojo). His Myspace page and Missingtoof both have a bazillion mixes and tracks you can download if you want a sneak preview of what's to come.

***Warning: Staring at this photo too long may induce seizures***

My personal favorite track that he did is called 'Relax in the City', and is a mashup of Glenn Frey and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. It's a bit slow to be played out at a club but it's still completely awesome anyway.
