Dear recent Orlando transplant:

Ok, so you just moved to Orlando from New York / Philly / Chicago / San Francisco / et al. You feel lost, uprooted, misplaced -- you're starting to think Orlando might suck. Eager to find some nightlife in this town, you go to Lattitudes on Church Street, Slingapour's on Wall Street and that mega-club on Orange Avenue owned by one of those Backstreet Boys (Orlando's finest celebrities). Maybe you even think International Drive, Citywalk or Downtown Disney is where everyone hangs out in this town. Now you really think Orlando sucks.

Well, you're wrong. There is more to this city than theme park "nightlife" and crappy clubs with guys wearing shiny shirts, but you have to know where to look. Instead of complaining about how lame Orlando is compared to your city of origin, why not get out there and support your new scene -- it's a lot better than you think! After all, you moved here for a reason, right? (I'm guessing to escape the cold weather.) So you can do one of two things: either 1) move back to the city you think is sooooo much more awesome or 2) quit bitchin', check the events below and DON'T SLEEP on the shit that is happening!

Black Kids, The Blog, and Tons of Painted Monkeys.

The Black Kids' story sounds it could be the plot of high school musical 18. Almost everyone knows who they are, and even those that don’t know the words to their hit song, but no one can really figure out how they got where they are so quickly, and almost effortlessly. Its a little reminiscent of Paris Hilton.

Black Kids have climbed the ranks of music’s food chain faster than anyone could ever have imagined. Primarily made up of a few big hitters and tons and tons of little guys, blogging about music has turned into an arena of file sharing, link listing and name dropping beyond what anyone could’ve ever expected. With the words “Black Kids” on everyone’s lips, with a million remixes to boot, the question that has arisen is whether or not Black Kids deserve the hype.

The short answer is yes. When Black Kids released their EPs, the Wizard of Ahhhs, as a digital download in 2007, there was a distinct need that needed to be met in the current indie scene. As Indie music became more saturated, Black Kids arose to meet a need in the scene. Here was a band whose music was incredibly mixable, whose songs could be changed over and over and over again, a band who able to break the barriers of Indie-land and launch a surprise attack on anyone listening. Blogs pick it up and help moving it along. A name like Black Kids only helps that even more.

Recently when band’s keyboardist Dawn Watley took a minute to talk to me, she was in London having just finished the Leeds Festival-Leeds and The Last Days of Summer, mid tour. The light at the end of the tunnel being that the Jacksonville band will soon be making their return to the States, and for the first time, will get to tour their home state of Florida.

Talking to one of the Black Kids, it becomes perfectly clear that Black Kids have an advantage that had helped them get to the top of European and dance music charts. The band members’ individuality, their tenacity and their serious dedication have led to their bands success. They are serious about their work, but they still play simply for the entertainment of it.

Now much of the buzz has quieted down, but the Black Kids are still touring, still chasing their goals. Every so often, a new remix of “I’m not gonna teach your boyfriend how to dance with you” pops up on the blogs. It has become clear that is very possible that the very blog hype that initially threatened to destroy them instead has helped launch them towards becoming what end up as the Beatles of a new generation. And if not, at least maybe the Monkees.

Black Kids have been writing new material while on the road. They hope to be back in the studio soon and plan to release a sophomore album in the summer of 2009. They perform in at the Social this Saturday, giving you a chance to judge for yourself.

Get Mental + His & Hers + Hellboy Art + Free Slurpees!!!

Another weekend is upon us here in O-town and I will start the same way I do every Friday -- with the Get Mental weekly password. If you haven't been to this night at Sky60 yet, you don't know the insanity you're missing. Tonight's password for free admission is: My doctor says this will be good for me. Take two shots of Jaeger and call me in the morning.

What do you get when you cross Ted Danson with The Lord of Darkness from Legend?

Hellboy, of course!

Saturday night, Überbot is celebrating the anticipated sequel, Hellboy II: Electric Boogaloo, with a comic-inspired art show. Click the flyer for more info.

There's another art show taking place at Bay Two at Mills Park on Saturday, but I couldn't find any information on it. At all. Except that it has a $7 cover, which is completely ridiculous.

The real meat and potatoes tomorrow is, of course, MY party at Crooked Bayou (I am so modest). Cub and I are joining forces to create His & Hers, and we are going to kick your ass with awesome music. Best of all, it's FREE, so you can spend more on booze and fried pickles. Oh word.

Have a great weekend -- hope to see you out!

PS... Since today is July 11th, 7-11 is giving out free slurpees!!!

A three-day weekend on my mind

Of course, you know about The Worst Music Party® by now, so I will only briefly say that it is THE BEST thing going on in Orlando tonight!!!! And this post is mostly for other weekend events, so let's get on with it.

Kick your Saturday night off in the Winter Park Village at the quaint little robot toy store slash comic book shop, Überbot. Apparently the store is in danger of closing and needs your support to continue thriving. How can you help? Visit the store between 7 and 11 PM for their fund raiser and art show -- local artists include Phil Noto, Terribly Odd, Erik Jones and others. All sales will benefit the store so get off your ass and help support our local businesses!!!

The world's most recognizable DJ, Tommie Sunshine, will be playing Saturday night at Firestone. Also on the bill is the man rarely photographed without a hat, Junkie XL. These super-mega tours are getting confusing: first MSTRKRFT paired up with John Digweed and now this. Picture this scene: a boardroom meeting full of stuffed shirts sitting around a conference table, intensely discussing how to make a larger profit from the "rave scene." A young go-getter named Mark jumps up and exclaims: "By, George, I've got it! We can match two DJs/Producers with completely opposite music taste, force them to go on tour together, and thereby doubling our potential audience! Plus we can charge twice as much to see them both!!!" Well, Mark got promoted, makes way more money than me, and made me want to see the show much less. Thanks, Mark! I can't wait for the Boys Noize and Tiesto tour next year!!!

Hailing from the deep depths of Austin, Texas is heavy metal band, The Sword, who will be unleashing their wrath and fury upon The Social on Saturday night. They may look more like writers than rockers, but everyone knows the die-hard metal people are super nerds! Trust me, I just saw Ace Frehley last weekend. Yes, I am a nerd too.

What better way to enjoy your long weekend then by getting drunk and biking around Orlando? Yep, it's time for another world famous Beer Bomb Bike Tour! You know the drill -- meet on Sunday at Mills Market around 6:00 PM, have some beer, bike to some bars (hopefully not Wally's, yikes!), lather, rinse, repeat.

Ok kids, be safe, have fun, say no to drugs, don't do anything I wouldn't do, etc. etc.
