Dear recent Orlando transplant:
Ok, so you just moved to Orlando from New York / Philly / Chicago / San Francisco / et al. You feel lost, uprooted, misplaced -- you're starting to think Orlando might suck. Eager to find some nightlife in this town, you go to Lattitudes on Church Street, Slingapour's on Wall Street and that mega-club on Orange Avenue owned by one of those Backstreet Boys (Orlando's finest celebrities). Maybe you even think International Drive, Citywalk or Downtown Disney is where everyone hangs out in this town. Now you really think Orlando sucks.
Well, you're wrong. There is more to this city than theme park "nightlife" and crappy clubs with guys wearing shiny shirts, but you have to know where to look. Instead of complaining about how lame Orlando is compared to your city of origin, why not get out there and support your new scene -- it's a lot better than you think! After all, you moved here for a reason, right? (I'm guessing to escape the cold weather.) So you can do one of two things: either 1) move back to the city you think is sooooo much more awesome or 2) quit bitchin', check the events below and DON'T SLEEP on the shit that is happening!

Commies + AK1200
What better way to kick off your week than by watching awesomely bad 80's movies about communism while drinking beer? Redlight Redlight is hosting a Cold War movie night to help us reminisce the days before color-coded homeland security charts and terror threats.

Beginning at 5pm, they'll start off light with Spies Like Us; pick it up a little with some early computer hacking and potential global thermo-nuclear war with War Games; and, as a grand finale, all the communists in the world invade with Red Dawn. Karl Marx would be proud.

Drum n bass junkies should join the Torque crew over at Crooked Bayou tonight for the Autopsy CD release party featuring Orlando's own AK1200.
Happy Monday!

DJ Rut + Torque's 9th Bday + Kid Charlemagne
The Crush kids have a very special guest joining them tonight at BackBooth: DJ Rut. Although he's barley old enough to drink, he has co-founded Club City Records and his tracks have already been promoted on notable blogs like Discobelle and Iheartcomix. I saw him DJ at the Windish Agency party at the WMC this past year and he is definitely one to watch.
Check out a few of his remixes below and visit his Myspace page to hear his WMC promo DJ mix.

Sara Bareilles - Love To Be Bmored (DJ Rut Remix).mp3
This party is free when you get on the Crush guestlist.

Also tonight at Crooked Bayou is the 9th year anniversary of Torque, Orlando's longest running drum 'n bass night. Any night that has made it this long in Orlando deserves mad props and support. Click the flyer for more details.

And, finally, if you're in the mood for a road trip, the ultimately awesome "driving in the car with dad" band, Steely Dan, is playing at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. Tickets are a bit expensive but totally worth it.

America's Favorite Mexican Holiday!!!
My liver needs a break... it really does. Unfortunately, it's going to have to hang in there a little longer because America's Favorite Mexican Holiday is upon us.

I would suggest starting off your evening at Crooked Bayou for their annual Cinco de Bayou fiesta. I'll be DJing from 6 - 10 PM and the Casa Noble tequila ladies will be pouring samples. Sorry liver.

Drum 'n bass kids should stick around for Torque, Orlando's longest running DNB night, with DJs Dyer and LT Smash.

Over at Crush, the electro kids will be losing their minds for D.I.M. Get in free before 11 by signing up on the Crush Guestlist.

Here is D.I.M. showing his skills with The Presets and (half of the Presets) K.I.M:
The Presets - My People (D.I.M. remix).mp3
Kim - Fistogram (D.I.M. remix).mp3

And, finally, if you feel like taking a road trip to Tampa, you can catch hip-hop mega-stars Kanye West, N.E.R.D., Rhianna and Lupe Fiasco at the Ford Amphitheater. I used to be a huge Kanye hater, but eventually I realized how dope he is. His ego is ginourmous, but at least he can back up all the shit he talks. Should be a sick show.
Here are two of my favorite Kanye songs, even though one is being totally played out at the moment.
Kanye West - Through The Wire.mp3
Kanye West - Flashing Lights.mp3
